Being a Good Example
As time goes on I find it harder and harder to figure-out when the example I set for my daughter is a good or a bad one. I know we all have times when we're cranky, lazy or just plain old exhausted ,and it's at those times we usually take the easiest path. I'm talking about about other things . . . let me explain.

Sunday evening, roughly 90 minutes before sunset my family set out on the great Christmas Tree hunt. We needed 2 trees, one for my house and one for my parent's house. Since my brother and his wife are currently shopping for a house they are borrowing a room at my parents house. And though my little brother spends most of his time 45 minutes south he still has a room at the house. So there were 5 adults voting on one tree and then little old me searching for my tree.

As usual I broke off from the group, opting to search out a noble rather then the kind my parents always get (spacing on the name at the moment . . for some reason an outdoor school song is running thru my head about a Douglas fir so I can't think of the one my parents like) . . . anyways. My daughter was with my Dad as I spread out over the vast acreage of tree farm. I have a habit of covering a lot of ground quickly, which also took me up hill. When I came across the first tree that caught my interest a name popped into my head (David) don't know why but it was there. So I spoke to the tree and called him David, not liking him I passed a few more possibilities. Then there was Peter, I liked Peter even though he wasn't the Noble I was looking for. I marked him with a long hanging twig and started to make my way towards the others (making sure to stay in the row Peter was in. But then it happened, I found Melman. A tall, not too awkward Noble.

I was stuck, I called for reinforcements (Mom) to take a look at the two since she had branched off from the group. She looked at Melman and then we walked up the hill to see Peter. My daughter came with us to check him out, Mom liked him and called for the others to check him out.

I grabbed the hand saw from my Dad before making the trek with my daughter to Melman. Yes I told her the tree's name was Melman, after a while she called out to him to let him know that we were looking for him. We cut him down and took him home, he's currently out on our porch till I get my tree stand out of storage.

Yesterday my daughter informed her Sitter that our tree was called Melman. I thought it was funny because then she made the comment about needing to name her tree to. Since her house is full of kids during the day.

Question of the Day: Is it a good or bad example for your child to talk to inatiment (sp?) objects? We name and talk to stuffies, but what about other things like Christmas Trees?
